A Liberian doctor has devised an unusual means of treating Ebola patients and he has achieved partial success.
Dr. Gobee Logan has treated 15 Ebola patients with the HIV drug, Lamivudine and 13 of them survived.
The survivors were given the drug in the first five days of their illness while those who died received it between days five and eight, CNN reports.
Dr. Logan said:
"I'm sure that when patients present early, this medicine can help,". "I've proven it right in my center."
The doctor is said to have admitted that the drug can cause other problems but he justified his actions by saying that the therapy is worth the risk because of how deadly Ebola is.
He also said he decided to try the drug when he read in scientific journals that HIV and Ebola replicate inside the body in much the same way.
"Ebola is a brainchild of HIV," he said. "It's a destructive strain of HIV."
Ebola has now killed over 3000 people in West Africa with about 1800 of that number coming from Liberia in an outbreak that has been described by the WHO as the worst ever recorded.
