Like many other fans and friends, Janet Jackson took to the site to pay her respects, sharing a heartfelt, handwritten note to the performer.
"I know u r there shining down on me," the "Rhythm Nation" hitmaker captioned a photo of the note, which read, "What I shared with u [is] ever sacred, everlasting, [and] it's pure and it will endure. I love u Aaliyah. #RIP"

Prior to her death in 2001, the "Are You That Somebody" singer planned to work with Jackson, whom she often cited as one of her idols and biggest musical influences.
"I am a huge fan of Janet," Aaliyah told Rosie O'Donnell in 1997. "I try to mention her in every interview because I want to meet her and maybe at some point in my career collaborate with her."
The admiration turned out to be mutual. A duet with the young princess of R&B was on Jackson's wish list, too -- but Aaliyah died before they could make it happen.
Shortly after the Romeo Must Die actress' passing, Jackson honored her in concert, dedicating the song "Come Back to Me" in her memory. She was also part of a tribute to Aaliyah at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards, which took place less than two weeks after the singer's fatal plane crash.
Taking the stage before Missy Elliott, Timbaland, and Ginuwine, Jackson read a letter that was sent to MTV by one of the star's fans. "I, for one, will not be sad or mourn her death, but celebrate her life and be thankful for her gift that's touched so many," the fan wrote. "We haven't lost anyone. We've only gained an angel."
Jackson later spoke about Aaliyah in a 2006 interview, recalling their first and only meeting, which had been orchestrated by mutual pal Missy Elliott.
"I really felt like we were gonna become really good friends," she said. "What a sweet girl, and one of the most stunning-looking women I have ever seen in my life in person. Just absolutely gorgeous. And she's very much so missed."
